Freedom Park Outreach
With the help of Pastor Franklyn, 1in1out organised an outreach to Freedom Park informal settlement in the South of Johannesburg on the 20th June 2009. 1in1out was joined by approximately 60 volunteers from Finishing Strong, Urban Oak (Rhema's youth) and Rant en Dal church.
A bus departed from Rhema Bible Church and brought the volunteers to the Fountain of Life church in Naturena. Pastor Franklyn is the pastor of this church. He and his wife Frieda had identified approximately 250 needy people from the nearby Freedom Park informal settlement and gathered everyone into the church hall.
The day's programme started with praise and worship organised by the Fountain of Life church. This was followed by a message by Paul Kafentzis from Finishing Strong. There was an altar call after the message where many people received Jesus and repeated the salvation prayer.
Thereafter the people were broken up into teams and ministered to individually by the volunteers. This helped the volunteers to lay hands, pray for the sick and also to counsel people on a one-on-one basis. Every person was given a Bible.
After this, the volunteers served each person in their group with a hot meal. As the people were leaving they were each given a blanket, a grocery hamper, clothes and a bag of biscuits. Some of the children were even treated to a pair of new shoes!
Dikgabane School Outreach
On Saturday the 7th February we set out to Dikgabane Primary School in Soweto. We hosted about 300 of the poorest of the poor children who attend the school together with about 50 parents and teachers. What an unbelievable experience to see how much can be accomplished with so few helpers! When we arrived at the school at 10am we were amazed to see the children already standing in lines eagerly waiting for us to arrive of the day.
The morning air was filled with the sounds of laughter and excitement. After being treated to a hot meal, the students marched to the classrooms where a further surprise awaited them. Their desks were laden full of stationery including a maths set for the higher grade maths students, pens, rulers, exercise books and best of all - a hugh packet of biscuits for everyone!
The school principal said this is the first time anyone did something like this and he hoped that we would come back again. He asked us to thank each of the sponsors for their generousity. We appreciate every contribution - big and small to the success of this day. To the volunteers who were willing to give up their time, a big thank you, your labour was not in vain and only eternity will reveal how many lives were changed forever.
We want to acknowledge our major sponsors and thank them for their valuable contributions which changed the lives of the students:
Stationery sponsored by WesBank Staff Payroll deductions,
Biscuits sponsored by SnackWorx,
Other literature sponsored by Ingrid and Gareth Saffy,
Ingredients for hot meals sponsored by Woolworths Hans Strijdom.
