On the morning of Saturday, 30th May we went out to Mount Olive Outreach in Lawley, Lenasia Extension 13. The day was planned with the main objective of getting people tested for HIV. The Mount Olive bus worked tirelessly to transport people from the squatter camp to the site. 1in1out was joined on the day by volunteers from Finishing Strong, Urban Oak (Rhema youth group) and All Stars (Little Falls youth group). There was plenty to do and everyone got involved in getting people who wanted testing registered and directing them to the testing facility. There were also queues of people waiting to have their blood sugar, blood pressure and cholestrol tested. Many of the volunteers spent time counselling the people who were waited to be tested and just sharing some love with them. This was warmly received and the crowd responded well to the volunteers. In total there was 375 people on the day and 100 children. 52 people got tested for HIV on the day and unfortunately 27 people tested positively as well as 1 couple that tested HIV positive. The doctor on site treated about 68 cases with general ailments such as influenza and asthma as well as HIV positive patients. Overall, approximately 200 people received medical attention/treatment on the day. After the testing, the crowd was treated to a hot meal. Bibles, 120 blankets, 400 bags of biscuits and 200 hampers consisting of canned food and clothing items were distributed on the day. We made sure that everyone took something back home with them. The day ended at about 18h00 when the last group of people were transported back to the squatter camps.
